    • Timothy Tsang

      Timothy Tsang

Consultant, Michael Page, Procurement and Supply Chain

A few of the reasons I joined Michael Page include - the nature of the role, company values and culture as well as the opportunity for career progression.

When I joined as a consultant after two years in Pricewaterhouse Coopers, I specialised in procurement, supply chain and engineering recruitment. I continued to seize opportunities to meet with clients and candidates from different industries. No matter which background the job opportunity is from, be it manufacturing, FMCG, large corporations or new start-ups, the exposure to new clients and organisations not only broadened my horizons and technical know-how, but also strengthened my personal qualities.

Relationship building, planning and organization skills, time management and the ability to ask questions in a precise and concise way are key techniques I have polished through my daily work in the talent search process. The well-structured training and unlimited support from my colleagues has also helped me excel into the position where I am now. The challenging, rewarding, and fast-paced work environment provides an ideal platform for me to continue to push my limits.

PageGroup also stresses career development and offers a clear path for promotion opportunities and international transfers.

    • Angela Chan

      Angela Chan

Senior Consultant, Page Personnel, Financial Services

Without a doubt, Michael Page is the world's number 1 recruitment company to me.

Many of my friends and peers have used Michael Page in the past and raved about their services so when I decided I wanted to join the recruitment industry, I had only Michael Page on my mind. Thankfully, I was able to join them!

By combining what I learned from Michael Page's world-class training platform alongside my own investment banking background, we launched the Hong Kong office's first dedicated temp desk. Now, the largest investment banks, asset management companies and other financial services providers rely upon me and my team to source suitable candidates at short notice.

Since I joined almost two years ago, I have been promoted to Senior Consultant and I manage two junior consultants. I have not only launched and grown the temp offering, but have also personally trained the rest of the Michael Page group in Hong Kong on how to effectively work on temporary assignments. I cannot imagine being able to achieve so much and gain so much responsibility in any other organisation in this short space of time!

I love the autonomy that I receive from my peers and managers, the opportunity to work on fee-earning activities, providing high level strategic input and gaining satisfaction from being able to better people's lives by finding them a more suitable job.

Everyday is different at Michael Page! On an action-packed day, I would be meeting and calling candidates to brief them on suitable roles, having lunch with a client to catch up on their latest hiring needs, sending shortlists for multiple active assignments, managing the offer process, and unwinding at the end of the day by going out with my colleagues for happy hour!

  • Manager
    • James Leung

      James Leung

Manager, Michael Page Property and Construction, Technology

I started my recruitment career in a small niche international recruitment business in the UK and wanted to move back to Hong Kong to further my career. I booked in a two week holiday in Hong Kong and met with three recruitment agencies here.

During my interviews with Michael Page, I met with a number of senior directors and directors in the business all of whom impressed me with their professionalism, experience and knowledge. I knew after the meetings that Michael Page is the right platform for me to join to kick-start my recruitment career. What also attracted me was Michael Page’s size and scale globally and in Hong Kong.

After joining the firm in January 2012 as a Senior Consultant, I was quickly promoted to be the Manager of the property & construction team in November 2012. In August 2014, I was asked to manage both the technology and property & construction teams.

The most rewarding part of my job is working with a great bunch of people. Within my teams, there is always a strong sense of team spirit which is great to see in a recruitment business and I find it very rewarding when team members who I have trained and mentored produce strong results through determination, working smart and hard work.

My usual day-to-day schedule includes attending client and candidate meetings, spending time with newer team members, running ad hoc training sessions with the team, giving guidance on how to manage pipelines and closing offers.

  • Director
    • Howard Chan

      Howard Chan

Director, Michael Page Hong Kong Sales & Marketing, Procurement & Supply Chain

My career in recruitment began when I met with a Consultant in the process of looking for a job, then ended up embarking on what would become my career path. Starting as a Consultant with PageGroup, I took on new and exciting challenges and was given the opportunity to increase my exposure to different platforms and networks.

Apart from the usual day-to-day running of the business and operations, I also meet clients and jobseekers to discuss their needs and also provide training and development to the team, which ranges from new joiners to more experienced Consultants or Managers. I enjoy that my job allows me to witness firsthand the growth and development of my teams while the continuous opportunity to meet clients and candidates creates new and exciting learning experiences.

Identifying what drives and motivates you in your career is important because once you understand this, a job will be appealing and exciting with different challenges every day. It is also important to embrace the values of the company you work for and I truly embrace the PageGroup values, especially teamwork, which is a pillar and foundation of our success. It has also helped fuel my aspiration to help individuals who want to work and grow in this business. I enjoy knowing that I am helping to grow the business, not just in terms of the bottom line but also human talent. Grooming our Managers and teams, identifying potential leaders and charting their career path with them give me immense gratification at work.

Working at PageGroup provides career opportunities and benefits that can only exist within a network, in a large and global organisation. As I reach my first decade with PageGroup, I look forward to a number of things including more responsibilities, a broader scope, bigger portfolios, developing future leaders and possibly, or hopefully, a promotion in the near future.

How did you hear about Michael Page?

I heard about Michael Page through a friend who previously used Michael Page’s service, and thought it would be a good idea for me to approach them for job opportunities. I was right!

Why did you decide to join Michael Page?

I was initially a candidate, and at the time, the manager proposed a recruitment opportunity to me, which sounded very left field, though extremely exciting and challenging! I decided to take on the challenge, and here I am 10 years later!

How have you grown with us?

I have joined Michael Page in 2004 and have grown organically to become the first local Director from an Associate Consultant level.

When you first started out with Michael Page, what were the challenges you faced and how did you overcome it?

The first challenge that I faced was making too many assumptions with clients and candidates, and therefore, I was not able to get the desired outcome that I wanted. After learning through mistakes, I learnt to take an open-minded approach to the recruitment process and to cover all the contingencies along the way.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

At this stage of my career, the most rewarding part is to train, groom and develop future leaders at different layers of my team to further grow my businesses.

What is your advice to graduates who are looking to join the recruitment industry?

      • Having the right attitude is key and it starts with the right work ethic and sense of responsibility/commitment
      • Enjoy what you do, maintain a strong EQ, and do not assume.
      • It is not just a sales job. It is a consultative/solutions sales job. Now act and perform like one!

Operation Smile

In China we support Operation Smile, a children’s charity that raises money to fund surgical procedures for children with facial deformities. PageGroup is a long-term supporter of the charity and has raised several hundreds of thousand dollars for Operation Smile through a range of activities in recent years. Our people participate in the annual Great Wall Marathon in Beijing, which has become a regular charity activity for PageGroup employees. In 2013 alone we had around 130 people participating, comprised of local teams from China as well as team members joining in from all over Asia.

International transfers

View the profiles of some of our international transfers to find out why our global presence makes us a great company to work for.
David Slater UK – Canada

I joined Michael Page Sales in 2006 as a consultant. Interestingly I didn't join (as many do) with the intentions of working internationally... it's funny how things pan out when the right opportunity presents itself.

Last year I had an internal discussion about the growth potential and the obstacles to overcome in our Canadian business. I'm now director of Michael Page Sales, Marketing and Technology in Toronto. It's still early days with plenty to accomplish but I already feel that I've learned so much. I'm excited about what lies ahead and it's clear that it was the 'right time', despite me not knowing it only a few months ago!

Alena Salakhova Russia – USA

One of the reasons I joined PageGroup in 2009 was the opportunity to gain international experience. After five years I knew I could stay or challenge myself somewhere new.

I am still a very young director and people in Russia consider my relocation to San Francisco Bay Area (the most developed area for new business development and start ups and an incredible place to live) as amazing.

The one thing I would say if you want to progress your career internationally – don’t be afraid to chase for it and make your dreams come true.

Denis Daniliuc France – Mexico

I joined in France as a consultant and progressed to manager level before applying for an international move and I was given the opportunity to move to New York. Heading back to Europe, I joined our office in Brussels to take over various disciplines in Belgium. After a few years, good results and a baby, I moved to Mexico City to grow our operations in this dynamic country.

I enjoy the nice weather and amazing weekend trips this beautiful country offers. If you want to develop professionally and enjoy a strong international network, PageGroup is definitely the place to be!

Aaron Bambrick Australia – Canada

I started at PageGroup on the graduate programme in 2008 and before transferring to Houston I recruited in the mining, oil and gas sectors in Brisbane. Transferring internationally can do a lot for your career but it’s also a big challenge.

Having worked in both the Australian and US oil and gas markets I have now transferred to Calgary to help open the office here and establish a local presence for Michael Page in Western Canada. Calgary is a beautiful city only an hour from the Rocky Mountains and the market is similar to that of Australia in a lot of aspects. Calgary presents a significant opportunity for Michael Page and gives us an integrated North American oil and gas team.

Jamie Hart UK – Sweden

I joined Michael Page in 2000 in London and in 2014 it felt the right time to explore international opportunities.

Learning something new about yourself and other people, learning new ways of recruiting in different markets has always been the main driver behind my attachment to PageGroup. Moving to Sweden has taken this to a whole new level.

The trust placed in you when you move abroad is inspiring, realising how much there is to learn gives you extra energy and living in a different environment positively challenges you professionally and personally. Now I won’t look back when I am old and wonder ‘if only’...

Marco Cremonese Italy – Germany

I started in Page Personnel Milan in 2009 as a trainee and became a senior consultant in the Retail division in 2010. In 2012 I took over the Digital & New Media specialisation and in October 2013 I became a manager.

I was happy in Milan but I wanted to experience meeting new people and working in a new division. I also wanted to develop personally.

I now work for Michael Page Finance & Accounting in Munich – of course it is a hard challenge and a new start, but it is a wonderful experience. I´m happy about the opportunity that PageGroup gave me.

Giovanni Presti Italy – Turkey

I was one of the top performers in Europe and won a trip to Istanbul. I didn’t know then but a year later the company, in response to my desire for international experience, was going to propose Turkey as my next chance to develop.

I am growing a new team in Istanbul, a wonderful city in a country where the culture is different from Italy but where there is a lot of energy in people and life. With PageGroup there are opportunities to learn about new cultures and live the experience.

Katherine Karlsen UK - South Africa

South Africa is very different from the UK, there are certain aspects of employment policy I had to overcome, but I find this makes it more exciting and it gave me a challenge. Johannesburg is known as the 'City of Gold' – as the gateway to Africa it provides you with further exposure to an emerging market. It really is an exciting place to recruit.

There is a great atmosphere in the office. The teams are motivated, passionate and diverse. There is a true sense of PageGroup culture here, with the added twist of South Africa.

Tamara Boonstra Netherlands – Indonesia

I was interested in the idea of international opportunities within the Group so started applying for a transfer. News came that the business was being launched in Jakarta, so I applied, got the job and moved here in January.

The best bit about moving is that it has taken me completely out of my comfort zone. I’m learning about a new culture and how to adapt in all sorts of situations – personally and professionally. Moving is definitely worthwhile. It has opened my mind and my eyes and given me space to explore and develop.

Simone Turola Italy – China

China is very different to Europe and the initial impact can be strong. It is important to have an open mind and see things with interest, curiosity and a sense of humour. Everyday can be a surprise, from the food to a new word that helps you in daily life to a new place to visit or a new person to meet.

I don’t know how many other companies can offer this level and variety of international opportunities; it’s a chance to build your future success. My only regret is that I should have done this earlier!

As well as attending your regional consultant development programme, you will also receive one-to-one support from your manager, including on desk coaching and shadowing and localised workshop sessions for key recruitment skills.
